ABU, Zaria, is one of those schools people talk about with respect, and its screening has one rule that catches people out every year: if you do not register for the screening exercise, you are not considered for admission.
No excuses, no "I thought JAMB would sort it". Here is how to handle the ABU process without stress.

The rule you must not miss
Reports on the 2026/2027 exercise say ABU told candidates that anyone who fails to register for screening will not be eligible for admission. The same notice warned that falsifying results leads to disqualification. So register, and register with true information.
Registration opened on 6 July 2026, according to published reports, and you did not have to travel to Zaria, because everything was done online. If you missed the window, check the university's website for any later notice before you do anything else.
What ABU reportedly asked for
Admission sites reported a UTME minimum of 180 for UTME candidates, and said Direct Entry candidates needed to register and pay the screening fee. The fee was reported as ₦2,000, paid online by debit card or through a printed slip at the bank.
Please treat those figures as reported and not official, because we could not confirm them on the school's own pages. Always read the notice on abu.edu.ng before you pay, and ask the admissions office if something looks different.
Documents to scan before you open the portal
Many people stall at this stage, because they start registration before they have their documents ready. Prepare them on your phone first, in clear scans.
- JAMB result slip
- O'Level certificate or result, in not more than two sittings
- A Level or equivalent certificate, for Direct Entry candidates
- Certificate or letter of state of origin (indigene certificate)
- National Identification Number (NIN)
- Birth certificate
UTME candidates were also asked to type in grades for five O'Level subjects relevant to their course. Be careful with this part, because a wrong grade can look like falsification.
Copy the grades exactly as they appear on your result. Our guide on documents for screening and verification gives more help.
Phone and email: small detail, big problem
Use a phone number and email address you check every day. If ABU needs to reach you about a correction or a result, a dead number or an email you never open means a lost chance.
Ask a parent or guardian to keep a copy of your login details, in case you lose your phone.
The O'Level combination question
If you have results from more than one exam, read our guide on combining WAEC and NECO results before you register. Mixing results wrongly is one of the commonest reasons for rejection.
If you are not sure whether your results can be combined, ask before you register. A short question to the school can save a whole year.
Keep your original results safe, and make clear copies for upload.
How to know if ABU has admitted you
ABU admission is also confirmed on JAMB CAPS. Log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, choose your exam year and enter your registration number.
If it says "Admitted", accept it before the offer expires, as explained in how to check and accept admission on the JAMB CAPS portal.
Your O'Level result must also be on CAPS. If that is not done, use our steps for NECO or WAEC.
Catchment and merit: why two people with the same score get different results
Federal universities share places between merit, catchment and states with fewer schools. That is why a candidate from one state may get a place while another with the same score does not.
It is not unfair, it is how the national policy works. Check your own state and course in the cut-off notices and plan accordingly.
Use our cut-off mark checker and the JAMB aggregate calculator to see how close you are.
If ABU does not call your name
Do not sit and wait until 31 October. If your name does not show, look at changing your institution, private universities still admitting and late admission options.
And remember: nobody can sell you a place at ABU. If someone asks you to pay into a personal account for "admission", walk away.
Questions worth asking the ABU admissions office
When the website does not give a clear answer, ask. Use the official contact details on abu.edu.ng and keep your questions short and specific.
- Is the screening registration still open, and what is the final date?
- What is the exact fee, and where should it be paid?
- Which documents are required for my route, UTME or Direct Entry?
- How will I be told about my screening result and admission?
Write down the answers with the date and the name of the person who helped you. If something goes wrong later, you will have a record.
Where this leaves you
ABU's rule is firm: no screening registration, no admission. Register properly, give true information, keep your receipts, and check CAPS for your offer.
If you still have no place by late October, move quickly to your next options, starting with changing your institution on JAMB.
