Understanding Nigerian Academic Grading & Admission Screening Systems
Comprehensive documentation on how grade points, quality points, cumulative grade point averages (CGPA), and university Post-UTME screening points are computed across Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education under the regulatory oversight of the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The Nigerian University 5.0 CGPA Grading Scale (NUC Benchmark)
Under the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) and the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), accredited Nigerian universities evaluate degree candidates using a unified 5-point cumulative grade point average system. Your final course score (continuous assessment of 30% or 40% plus end-of-semester examination of 60% or 70%) generates a Letter Grade and a Grade Point (GP). This Grade Point is multiplied by the Course Credit Units (CU) to calculate the Quality Points (QP) earned for that course.
| Raw Score Range | Letter Grade | Grade Point (GP) | Class of Degree (Cumulative Range) | Academic Remark |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70% to 100% | A | 5.00 | First Class Honours (4.50 to 5.00) | Excellent Mastery |
| 60% to 69% | B | 4.00 | Second Class Upper (2:1) (3.50 to 4.49) | Very Good |
| 50% to 59% | C | 3.00 | Second Class Lower (2:2) (2.40 to 3.49) | Good / Satisfactory |
| 45% to 49% | D | 2.00 | Third Class Honours (1.50 to 2.39) | Fair / Minimum Pass |
| 0% to 44% | F | 0.00 | Fail / Probation (< 1.50) | Carryover Required |
Consider a 100-Level Computer Science student who registered for 5 courses totaling 15 credit units:
The Nigerian Polytechnic 4.0 Grading System (NBTE Scale)
National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes across federal, state, and private polytechnics in Nigeria operate under the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) 4-point scale. Graduation diploma classifications correspond directly to cumulative performance across all 4 semesters of technical coursework and mandatory SIWES industrial training.
| Raw Score | Letter Grade | Grade Point (4.0) | Diploma Classification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 75% to 100% | A | 4.00 | Distinction (3.50 to 4.00) |
| 70% to 74% | AB | 3.50 | Upper Credit (3.00 to 3.49) |
| 60% to 69% | B | 3.00 | Upper Credit (3.00 to 3.49) |
| 50% to 59% | C | 2.50 to 2.99 | Lower Credit (2.50 to 2.99) |
| 40% to 49% | D | 2.00 to 2.49 | Pass (2.00 to 2.49) |
| 0% to 39% | F | 0.00 | Fail (< 2.00) |
How Nigerian Universities Calculate Post-UTME Aggregate Screening Scores
After JAMB publishes UTME results, each tertiary institution conducts admission screening using one of three official mathematical models approved by university senate boards:
UTME score is divided by 8 (max 50%). Your 5 best relevant O'Level grades are converted to a 20-point maximum. Post-UTME marks provide the remaining 30%.
UTME score is divided by 8 (giving 50 points). The computer-based Post-UTME screening test (scored out of 100) is divided by 2 (giving 50 points). Total = 100%.
Each O'Level grade is awarded points (A1=8, B2=7, B3=6, C4=5, C5=4, C6=3). Points from the 5 compulsory subjects (max 40) are combined with scaled UTME marks.
O'Level Grade Point Equivalency Scale (WAEC / NECO / NABTEB)
When institutions evaluate your Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results during physical or online screening clearance, grades across your 5 core subjects (including Mathematics and English Language) are converted into points:
| Grade Symbol | Official Definition | Standard 9-Point Scale | Standard 8-Point Scale | 4.0 Weighted Screening Scale | Matriculation Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | Excellent (75% to 100%) | 9 Points | 8 Points | 4.0 Points | Credit Pass |
| B2 | Very Good (70% to 74%) | 8 Points | 7 Points | 3.6 Points | Credit Pass |
| B3 | Good (65% to 69%) | 7 Points | 6 Points | 3.2 Points | Credit Pass |
| C4 | Credit (60% to 64%) | 6 Points | 5 Points | 2.8 Points | Credit Pass |
| C5 | Credit (55% to 59%) | 5 Points | 4 Points | 2.4 Points | Credit Pass |
| C6 | Credit (50% to 54%) | 4 Points | 3 Points | 2.0 Points | Credit Pass |
| D7, E8, F9 | Pass / Fail (< 50%) | 0 Points | 0 Points | 0.0 Points | Deficient (Non-Credit) |
Frequently Asked Academic & Calculation Questions
Authoritative guidance on university grading scales, Post-UTME screening, O'Level combination, and admission cut-offs.
1 How do I calculate my cumulative CGPA accurately across multiple semesters?
To calculate your CGPA, multiply the credit units of every registered course by its grade point (A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=0) to find the Quality Points (QP) for each course. Sum all quality points across all semesters to obtain your Total Quality Points (TQP). Then, divide TQP by your Total Credit Units (TCU) registered. You can use our Student CGPA Calculator to automate this with instant degree classification.
2 How does a carryover (failed course) impact my cumulative CGPA?
When you score an F (0.0 points) in a course, the course's credit units still add to your denominator (Total Registered Units) while adding zero quality points to your numerator. When you retake and pass the course in a subsequent session, both attempts remain on your official transcript in most Nigerian universities, and the new earned quality points and units are factored in. Clearing carryovers early prevents cumulative grade depression.
3 What is the difference between general JAMB cut-off and departmental cut-off?
The general JAMB cut-off mark (e.g., 140 for private universities, 160 to 200 for federal and state universities) is the minimum score required to be eligible to sit for an institution's post-UTME screening exercise. The departmental cut-off mark is the composite aggregate score required to secure merit admission into a specific program (such as 78% for Medicine or 72% for Law).
4 How do Nigerian universities compute Post-UTME aggregate screening points?
Institutions use either a 50:50 model (UTME/8 + PUTME/2), a 50:20:30 composite model (UTME 50% + O'Level 20% + Post-UTME 30%), or an O'Level point aggregation model. You can test all institutional calculation formulas using our JAMB Aggregate Score Calculator.
5 Can I combine two O'Level sittings (WAEC + NECO) for university screening?
Yes, most Nigerian universities accept combinations of two O'Level results (e.g. WAEC May/June with NECO June/July, or WAEC with GCE). However, some competitive faculties, most notably Medicine and Surgery in select federal institutions (such as UNILAG and UI), mandate that all five required credits be achieved in a single sitting.
6 What target UTME score is recommended for competitive university courses?
For highly competitive degree programs (Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Law, and Computer Science), students should target a minimum composite score of 270 to 300+ in UTME. For Engineering and Accounting, a score of 240 to 260+ provides a strong buffer. You can use our JAMB Target Score Breakdown Calculator to map out required marks per subject.
7 Are these academic calculators completely free to use?
Yes. All 8 academic calculators and checking tools on SchoolGateHub are 100% free and accessible on mobile, tablet, and desktop devices without requiring paid subscriptions or downloads.
