Picture a candidate who sees "Admitted" on his CAPS page on a Tuesday morning.
He screams, calls his mother, and then spends the next three weeks arguing with the family about whether the course is the right one, whether to wait for a better school, and whether the fees are manageable. Nobody clicks Accept.
Then one day the offer is gone. It sounds dramatic, but JAMB has now put a clock on every approved admission, and the clock does not wait for family meetings.
This guide explains how the four-week acceptance window works, what can happen if you let it run out, and how to handle old offers that were never answered.
If you want the full screen-by-screen walkthrough of the CAPS portal, we already have one in our guide to checking and accepting admission on the JAMB CAPS portal. Here we focus on the deadline, the risks and the decisions around it.

The four-week clock, explained
JAMB's 2026 admission rules say there is a grace period of four weeks within which all approved admissions must be accepted by the candidate. In practical terms, that is about 28 days from the day the offer shows on your profile.
The same rule came out of the board's policy meeting in May 2026, where it was stated that admitted candidates have a maximum of four weeks to accept their offer.
Two points are easy to miss:
- The clock starts when the offer is approved on your profile, not when you happen to log in and notice it.
- The institution deadlines (31 October for public universities, 30 November for private universities and 31 December for other institutions) are separate. They tell schools when to finish admitting. The four weeks tell you when to respond.
What can happen if you let the clock run out
Reports on the 2026 admission schedule say candidates who fail to accept within the four weeks risk having their offers deleted when the institution asks for it, and being placed in what JAMB calls the refusal to accept category.
According to those reports, that category can make a candidate ineligible for future admissions. JAMB has not spelled out every detail of how it will apply this in each case, so treat the warning seriously and do not test it.
Even if the worst never happens to you, a withdrawn offer means your slot can go to someone else. Many courses fill up fast at this stage of the session, and a second chance on the same course may never come.
Old offers from 2021 to 2025 have their own deadline
If you were admitted in a previous year and never accepted or rejected the offer, there is a separate rule.
On 30 September 2026, JAMB announced that the deadline for candidates with outstanding offers from 2021 to 2025 had been extended to 30 November 2026.
After that date, any offer you have not responded to will be converted to "Not Admitted" on JAMB's records. The announcement also says any later request to update such an admission will attract the applicable penalty fee.
So if you have a cousin, a younger sibling or a friend who "never finished the process" from an earlier year, tell them this now. Cleaning up an old record is much cheaper before 30 November than after.
How to accept admission on CAPS in five steps
The exact buttons can change when JAMB updates the portal, but the flow reported by candidates and news outlets this year looks like this:
- Go to the JAMB e-Facility website at efacility.jamb.gov.ng and log in with the email and password you used when you registered. Type the address yourself so you do not land on a fake site.
- Click Check Admission Status, choose your exam year, and enter your JAMB registration number.
- Click Access my CAPS to open your admission dashboard.
- Open Admission Status in the side menu and read the offer carefully, including the school and the course.
- Click Accept Admission, or Reject Admission if you are sure, then confirm in the pop-up box.
If your phone shows a blank page after login, many candidates fix it by switching their browser to desktop mode. A shared laptop at a trusted CBT centre or a friend's computer also works.
Accepting on CAPS is not the same as paying school fees
This is where many candidates get confused, and where scammers like to operate. Accepting your offer on CAPS is a decision you record with JAMB.
The acceptance fee, school fees and other charges belong to the school and follow the school's own process after your admission shows as approved.
Do not pay any school charge before your status actually reads Admitted on CAPS, and pay only through the payment channels shown on the school's own website.
For more on this scenario, see our explanation of what to do when your school portal says admitted but CAPS says otherwise.
Should you accept or reject? Think before you click
Take a calm look at these questions before you decide. Accepting is the right call if you can see yourself finishing the course, the school is accredited and the fees are realistic for your family.
Rejecting may be right if the course is far from what you want and you have a real alternative in hand.
Rejecting is a serious step, so do not do it just because you are frustrated or because someone on Facebook told you to.
If your real wish is a different course in the same school, check your Transfer Approval tab first. Our page on JAMB CAPS transfer approval explains how those offers work.
If you are still waiting for any offer at all, start with our guide for candidates who are not admitted as the deadlines approach.
Why some candidates cannot accept even when they try
A few problems come up again and again, and most of them are fixable:
- Wrong exam year: If you wrote UTME more than once, pick the year that matches the offer.
- Forgotten login details: Use the password recovery option on the e-Facility page and make sure you still have access to the email you registered with.
- Offer not showing: Check that your O'Level results are uploaded and that the school has actually uploaded the batch that includes you.
- Portal slowdown: Admission season traffic is heavy. Try early in the morning, and do not leave acceptance until your last day.
If none of these fits your case, take a screenshot of the error on your screen. That picture helps JAMB staff understand what is wrong when you visit an office.
Do not pay anyone who says they can accept the offer for you. The acceptance must be done from your own profile.
Watch out for "CAPS agents"
Every admission season, people appear online offering to "accept your admission for you", "reactivate an expired offer" or "reset your CAPS". Your CAPS account is tied to your personal email and your registration number.
Giving those details to a stranger is the quickest way to lose your offer. If something goes wrong, go to a JAMB office or an accredited CBT centre, and ask the school's admissions office for help with their side of the process.
Final word
Treat the day you see "Admitted" as day one of a countdown. Discuss it with your family quickly, decide within a few days, accept on CAPS, then follow the school's own steps for fees and clearance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about this guide
1How long do I have to accept my JAMB admission offer in 2026?
JAMB has said approved admissions must be accepted within a grace period of four weeks, which is roughly 28 days from when the offer appears on your profile. Do not wait until the last day, because portal slowdowns are common during admission season.
2What happens if I do not accept my admission on CAPS within four weeks?
Reports on JAMB's 2026 schedule say the offer can be deleted at the institution's request and the candidate placed in a refusal to accept category, which can affect future admissions. Accept early so you never have to find out how strictly this is applied.
3I was admitted in 2023 and never accepted. Is it too late?
JAMB extended the deadline for outstanding offers from 2021 to 2025 to 30 November 2026. After that date they convert to Not Admitted, and later updates attract a penalty fee, so act before the deadline.
4Do I pay anything to accept admission on JAMB CAPS?
The sources reviewed for this guide describe accepting on CAPS as a button click with no stated fee. School charges such as acceptance fee and tuition are separate and are paid to the school through its official channels. Never pay a stranger to accept for you.
5Why does my CAPS page show a blank screen on my phone?
This is a common problem. Many candidates fix it by switching the browser to desktop mode, or by using a laptop. If it still fails, try again early in the morning or visit an accredited CBT centre.
6Can I reject an admission and still get another one?
Possibly, but it is a serious step and you should confirm your next option first. If you want a different course in the same school, check the Transfer Approval tab before you reject anything.
