JAMB Admission Deadline 2026/2027: Exact Dates by School

JAMB's 2026/2027 admission deadline is 31 October 2026 for public universities, 30 November 2026 for private universities, and 31 December 2026 for polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education. If you're still waiting for admission, here's what those dates actually mean for you and what to check before they arrive.

As the admission season gets closer to its final stages, candidates naturally begin to worry. Your JAMB CAPS may still be showing “Not Admitted.” Your school may not have released its supplementary list. You may be considering changing your course or institution. Meanwhile, you keep hearing different dates from WhatsApp groups, Facebook posts and friends.

The important thing to understand is that JAMB does not give every type of tertiary institution the same deadline for concluding admissions.

For the 2026/2027 admission exercise, the agreed deadlines are 31 October 2026 for public universities, 30 November 2026 for private universities, and 31 December 2026 for polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of education and other tertiary institutions. Recent reporting on JAMB's September 2026 position also confirms that the Board is still urging public universities to work towards the 31 October deadline.

So, if you are still waiting for admission, don't panic simply because another candidate has already been admitted. But don't sit back and assume you have unlimited time either.

This guide explains the JAMB 2026/2027 admission deadlines, what those dates actually mean, whether CAPS will stop working immediately after the deadline, and what you should check if you are still waiting for admission.

Official JAMB 2026/2027 Admission Deadlines

The 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions was held on 11 May 2026. JAMB's official website confirms the meeting and the admission benchmarks agreed for the 2026 exercise.

The admission closing dates announced for the different categories of institutions are as follows:

Institution | 2026/2027 Admission Deadline
Public Universities | 31 October 2026
Private Universities | 30 November 2026
Polytechnics, Monotechnics, Colleges of Education and other institutions | 31 December 2026

These dates are important because they represent the periods within which the different categories of institutions are expected to conclude their admission exercises. Reporting from the 2026 Policy Meeting gives the same staggered schedule, and JAMB's late-September position continues to refer to 31 October for public universities, 30 November for private universities and 31 December as the overall closing date for other institutions.

When Will Public Universities Stop Admission for 2026/2027?

Public universities are expected to conclude their 2026/2027 admission exercises by 31 October 2026. This category includes federal and state universities.

This deadline matters particularly to candidates waiting for admission from public universities because these institutions are expected to finish processing their candidates earlier than private universities and other tertiary institutions.

As of late September 2026, JAMB was still urging public universities to speed up their admission processing in order to meet the 31 October deadline. The Board also advised candidates awaiting NECO results to upload or verify their results so their credentials would be available for admission consideration.

If you are waiting for a public university and CAPS still says Not Admitted, this is therefore the period to check your admission details carefully rather than assuming everything will eventually sort itself out.

When Will Private Universities Stop Admission for 2026/2027?

Private universities have a later deadline. They are expected to conclude their 2026/2027 admissions by 30 November 2026.

This gives private universities additional time after the public university deadline.

For candidates, this can be important if admission into a public university does not work out and they are considering a private institution. However, the later deadline should not be interpreted to mean that every private university will continue accepting applications until 30 November.

An individual university can close its application or screening process earlier.

The JAMB deadline is therefore not automatically the same thing as your school's Post-UTME or application deadline. Always check the institution's own admission information as well.

When Will Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Stop Admission?

The overall deadline for polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of education and other applicable tertiary institutions is 31 December 2026.

This means that candidates considering ND, NCE and related programmes may still have admission opportunities after university admissions have largely been concluded.

Again, don't wait until 31 December before taking action. Individual institutions can finish filling their available spaces earlier.

If a polytechnic has completed its admission exercise and filled its approved spaces, the fact that the national deadline has not arrived does not mean it must continue admitting candidates.

Why Does JAMB Give Different Admission Deadlines?

The staggered deadlines help organise the admission process across the different types of tertiary institutions.

Public universities generally receive large numbers of applications and are expected to conclude first. Private universities are then given additional time, while polytechnics, colleges of education and other institutions have until the overall admission deadline.

JAMB's mandate includes considering available vacancies, institutional admission guidelines and candidates' preferences when placing suitably qualified candidates into tertiary institutions.

CAPS was introduced to help coordinate this process. According to JAMB, the Central Admissions Processing System was designed to automate admissions, improve transparency, expand candidates' admission opportunities and address problems associated with the old manual admission process.

Does the 31 October Deadline Mean JAMB CAPS Will Shut Down?

No. Candidates should not interpret the 31 October public university deadline to mean that the entire JAMB CAPS website will suddenly disappear or become inaccessible at midnight.

The deadline concerns the admission exercise for the relevant category of institutions.

JAMB CAPS handles different stages of the admission process. The live 2026/2027 CAPS dashboard, for example, separately records candidates awaiting institution recommendation, candidates on JAMB desk officers' tables, candidates approved for acceptance and candidates who have already accepted their admissions.

This distinction is important.

If your institution has already started processing your admission, don't automatically assume that everything becomes invalid simply because you see a particular deadline approaching.

At the same time, you should not use this as a reason to delay something that requires action from you.

If CAPS is asking you to accept an admission, respond appropriately. If you have a course transfer waiting for your approval, investigate it. If your O'Level result is missing, deal with it as soon as possible.

Can JAMB Extend the 2026 Admission Deadline?

An admission deadline can be extended if JAMB officially announces an extension, but candidates should never assume an extension will happen.

There is a recent example. For the 2025/2026 admission cycle, public universities were initially required to conclude admission by 31 October 2025. JAMB later extended that public-university deadline to 17 November 2025 because of what it described as emergent circumstances.

That was an extension for the previous admission cycle. It should not be treated as evidence that the 2026 deadline will also be extended.

For 2026/2027, candidates should work with the currently announced deadlines unless JAMB officially says otherwise.

My CAPS Still Says “Not Admitted.” Should I Be Worried?

Seeing Not Admitted does not automatically mean your admission chances are over, particularly if your institution is still processing admissions.

But as the deadline approaches, you should check whether anything on your own profile requires attention.

Start by confirming whether your institution has actually begun releasing admissions for your programme. Some departments may be processed before others.

You should also check whether your O'Level result is correctly available to JAMB, whether there is a pending course transfer on CAPS and whether your institution and course details are correct.

If your institution has already released several admission lists and your status has remained unchanged, contact the institution's admissions office rather than relying entirely on rumours from other candidates.

Check Your O'Level Result Before the Admission Deadline

If you used awaiting results during registration, or you are not sure whether your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result is available to JAMB, check it.

This is particularly important now.

In September 2026, JAMB specifically advised candidates who had been awaiting NECO results to upload or verify those results so that their credentials would be available as institutions intensified admission processing.

Do not assume that because you uploaded your result to your university's screening portal, everything is automatically correct on the JAMB side.

Log in to your JAMB profile and verify your information. If something is missing and requires a CBT centre, use a JAMB-accredited CBT centre.

Check JAMB CAPS Transfer Approval

Another place worth checking is Transfer Approval.

Sometimes an institution cannot admit a candidate into the original programme but is willing to consider the candidate for another course.

If there is a genuine transfer offer waiting on your CAPS profile, read the proposed course carefully and decide whether you are willing to accept it.

Don't leave a transfer request unattended simply because your main Admission Status page still says Not Admitted.

At the same time, don't accept a course you have no interest in studying just because you are afraid of missing admission. Research the programme before making your decision.

Should You Change Institutions Because the Deadline Is Close?

A Change of Institution can be useful in some situations, but it should not be done blindly.

Before changing to another school, confirm that the institution is still accepting candidates and that you satisfy its requirements.

There is little benefit in changing to an institution that has already completed its screening, closed applications or filled the programme you want.

Also remember that changing institutions does not guarantee admission.

Your UTME score, O'Level subjects, UTME combination, programme requirements and the institution's available admission spaces can still affect the outcome.

If you are considering a change because your current choice is unlikely to admit you, check the alternative institution carefully before paying for anything.

Can You Still Get Admission After 31 October 2026?

Yes, depending on the type of institution.

The 31 October deadline specifically applies to public universities. Private universities have until 30 November 2026, while polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of education and other applicable institutions have until 31 December 2026 under the announced timetable.

So 31 October is not the end of every admission opportunity in Nigeria for the 2026/2027 session.

However, this does not mean you can simply choose any institution on 1 November and expect admission.

You still need to meet the institution's requirements, and the institution itself must still be admitting candidates.

Can a Public University Release a Supplementary List After 31 October?

Public universities are expected to conclude their admission processes by 31 October 2026 under the current schedule.

If JAMB announces an extension or makes another official arrangement, the situation can change. Without such an announcement, candidates should work with 31 October as the relevant public-university deadline.

This is another reason to be careful with websites claiming that a particular university will definitely release another list after the deadline.

Wait for an official announcement from the institution or JAMB.

CAPS admission processing involves more than one stage.

JAMB's live dashboard distinguishes between candidates awaiting recommendation, candidates already on JAMB desk officers' tables, candidates approved for acceptance and candidates who have accepted their admission.

If your admission is already being processed, continue monitoring CAPS and follow any instructions displayed on your profile.

Don't assume you have lost the admission simply because somebody tells you that "JAMB has closed."

If you need clarification about your particular admission status, contact your institution or use JAMB's official support channel.

Four Mistakes to Avoid as the JAMB Admission Deadline Approaches

One mistake is waiting endlessly for a supplementary list without checking whether your institution has actually announced one. Schools do not all follow the same admission pattern. If your school has not announced another list, don't treat WhatsApp rumours as confirmation that one is coming.

Another mistake is ignoring your CAPS information. Check your admission status, O'Level details and Transfer Approval periodically. Something may require your response before the admission can progress.

Candidates should also avoid changing institutions simply because another school appears easier to enter. Confirm that the new institution is still processing candidates and that you meet the requirements before making the change.

Finally, don't neglect your O'Level information. With institutions being urged to complete their admissions, an unresolved problem with your credentials is something you should investigate quickly.

What Should You Do If You Are Still Not Admitted?

If your CAPS still says Not Admitted, begin by checking the official admission updates from your institution. Find out whether the school is still admitting candidates and whether your programme's list has been released.

Next, verify your JAMB information. Check your O'Level details, your selected institution and programme, and your Transfer Approval section.

If everything appears correct, continue monitoring CAPS while the institution is still within its admission period.

If you are considering another institution, research it before changing. Check whether applications or screening are still open and whether you satisfy the programme requirements.

You can access your account through the official JAMB e-Facility portal.

Can Private Universities Still Admit Candidates After Public Universities Stop?

Yes. Under the 2026/2027 schedule, private universities have until 30 November 2026, one month after the public university deadline.

This can provide another option for candidates who do not secure admission into their preferred public university, provided they can meet the private institution's requirements and financial obligations.

If you are considering this route, don't choose a university simply because it says admission is available.

Check that the institution and programme are properly recognised, look at the total cost of attendance, accommodation, location, programme requirements and other factors that matter to you.

Can Polytechnics Still Admit Candidates in December 2026?

Yes. The announced deadline for polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of education and other applicable tertiary institutions is 31 December 2026.

This means there may still be opportunities in these institutions after university admission deadlines have passed.

But the national deadline does not force every institution to keep applications open until the final day. Some schools may complete their admissions much earlier.

Always check the institution's official website before making a Change of Institution or paying for any screening form.

What Happens If You Miss the 2026/2027 Admission Cycle?

If the 2026/2027 admission exercise ends without you receiving admission, be very careful about anyone offering you an "internal admission" that supposedly does not need JAMB.

JAMB's official guidance is clear that admission offered outside JAMB's recognised process and without a JAMB admission letter is not recognised by the Board. JAMB states that candidates who accept admission outside CAPS do so at their own risk.

If you don't secure admission this session, that is disappointing, but it is better than paying for an admission that creates bigger problems later.

You can prepare for the next UTME or investigate other legitimate admission routes for which you qualify. If you are considering programmes such as JUPEB or IJMB, check the specific university's Direct Entry requirements before enrolling because participation does not automatically guarantee 200-level admission.

Final Advice for Candidates Still Waiting for Admission

If you are still waiting for admission for the 2026/2027 session, don't allow the approaching deadline to push you into making a rushed decision.

For public universities, keep 31 October 2026 in mind. Private universities have until 30 November 2026, while the overall timetable extends to 31 December 2026 for polytechnics, colleges of education and other applicable institutions.

Before the relevant deadline reaches your institution, check that your O'Level information is available, monitor CAPS for admission or transfer updates and follow official announcements from your school.

If you are thinking about changing your institution or course, confirm that the new option is still available before paying for the change.

Most importantly, don't let somebody use the pressure of an approaching deadline to collect money from you with promises of "special admission," "CAPS upgrading" or a guaranteed admission slot.

A valid admission should eventually be properly processed through JAMB CAPS. JAMB describes CAPS as its central system for coordinating tertiary admissions, and the Board explicitly warns against accepting admissions outside that process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about this guide

1When will all JAMB admissions end in 2026?

The overall schedule allows polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of education and other applicable tertiary institutions to conclude admission by 31 December 2026.

2Will JAMB CAPS close on 31 October?

The 31 October date is the deadline for public universities to conclude their admission exercise. It should not be interpreted as meaning that candidates will suddenly be unable to access the entire CAPS platform on that date.

3Can JAMB extend the admission deadline?

JAMB can announce an extension when circumstances require it. This happened in 2025 when the public-university deadline was extended from 31 October to 17 November. However, candidates should not assume there will be an extension in 2026 unless JAMB officially announces one.

4Can I still change institutions in October?

The availability of a JAMB correction service does not mean the institution you want to change to is still accepting candidates. Confirm the school's admission status and your eligibility before making the change.
