JAMB CAPS Transfer Approval: How to Accept or Reject Transfer

You applied for Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Law, Engineering or another competitive course. After waiting for admission updates, you check your school portal and discover that the institution is considering you for a completely different programme.

Maybe you applied for Nursing Science and the school is offering you Anatomy. You applied for Medicine and Surgery but you are being considered for another science course. Or perhaps you applied for Law and the alternative course showing on your profile is something you never expected.

You then check your normal JAMB CAPS admission status and still see “Not Admitted.” At this point, it is easy to think something has gone wrong.

Before you panic, check the Transfer Approval section of JAMB CAPS.

JAMB uses this feature when an institution wants to move a candidate from the programme originally selected to another programme. The important part is that the institution cannot simply complete the movement without giving you the opportunity to accept or reject it. JAMB's published CAPS guidance states that candidates should receive a transfer alert and be allowed to accept or reject the proposed movement.

This guide explains what JAMB CAPS Transfer Approval means, how to check whether you have a transfer offer, what happens when you accept or reject it and what you should do afterwards.

What Is JAMB CAPS Transfer Approval?

JAMB CAPS Transfer Approval is a feature that allows an institution to propose moving a candidate from the course originally chosen to another programme.

For example, suppose you applied for Nursing Science, but after considering your score and other admission requirements, the university is unable to offer you Nursing. If the institution believes you qualify for another available programme, it can propose that programme to you through CAPS.

You are then expected to decide whether you want the alternative course.

According to JAMB's CAPS policy guidance, before a candidate can be moved to another programme, the candidate should receive a transfer notification and be given the opportunity to accept or reject the movement.

This is an important protection for candidates. It means you should know the programme you are being moved to and have an opportunity to decide whether you are willing to study it.

Why Did My School Transfer Me to Another Course?

Being offered another course does not necessarily mean there is something wrong with your application.

Universities, polytechnics and colleges have limited admission spaces, particularly for highly competitive programmes. A school may have thousands of candidates applying for a programme but only a limited number of places available.

If you do not meet the institution's requirements for your original programme but meet the requirements for another available course, the institution may consider transferring you rather than ending your admission consideration entirely.

For instance, a candidate may have a good UTME and Post-UTME performance but still fall below the admission threshold used by the institution for a particularly competitive programme. If another department has available space and the candidate satisfies its requirements, a transfer may be proposed.

The exact reason can differ from one institution and candidate to another. It is therefore better not to assume that every transfer is caused by a low JAMB score.

Why Does JAMB CAPS Say “Not Admitted” When I Have a Transfer Offer?

This can happen because a course transfer and a final admission offer are not exactly the same thing.

Your institution may first need your response to the proposed programme change before the admission process can continue under that programme.

JAMB's official support information specifically advises candidates whose institution has shortlisted them but whose CAPS status still shows Not Admitted or Admission in Progress to check whether they have an unaccepted offer in the Transfer Approval section.

Therefore, if your school has told you that you are being considered for another course but your normal CAPS page still says Not Admitted, checking Transfer Approval should be one of your first steps.

What Happens If You Accept a Course Transfer on JAMB CAPS?

If you accept the transfer, you are agreeing to be moved from your original programme to the new programme proposed by the institution.

For example, if your original course was Nursing Science and the transfer offer is for Anatomy, accepting means you are agreeing to continue the admission process under Anatomy.

JAMB's published CAPS guidance states that when a candidate accepts the proposed movement, the candidate is moved to the new programme. It also indicates that the candidate will need to make the appropriate change of programme so the admission documentation can reflect the new programme.

Accepting the transfer should therefore be treated as an important admission decision, not something you click simply because you want your CAPS status to change.

Before accepting, ask yourself a simple question: Am I genuinely willing to study this course if the admission is completed?

If the answer is yes, accepting may allow the admission process to continue under the alternative programme.

What Happens If You Reject the Transfer?

If you reject the transfer, you are telling the institution that you do not want to be moved to the proposed programme.

JAMB's published CAPS guidance says that where a candidate rejects the proposed movement or does not respond, the candidate remains with the existing programme and cannot be moved through that transfer.

However, rejecting a transfer should not be interpreted as a guarantee that the institution will later admit you into your original course.

For example, if you applied for Medicine but the institution cannot accommodate you in Medicine and instead offers another programme, rejecting the alternative does not automatically create a Medicine admission slot for you.

What happens afterwards will depend on the institution's admission process, available spaces and your eligibility.

This is why you should think carefully before rejecting an alternative programme.

Should You Accept or Reject a JAMB Course Transfer?

There is no single answer that is correct for every candidate.

If you genuinely like the new course, understand what it involves and would be comfortable studying it for several years, accepting the transfer may make sense for you.

However, if the new programme is something you have no interest in studying, don't accept simply because you are afraid of losing admission.

Before deciding, research the new course properly. Find out what students actually study, how long the programme takes, the career paths available after graduation and whether the course matches your interests and long-term plans.

Also speak with your parents, guardian or someone knowledgeable about the programme if you need another perspective.

Do not make the decision based only on the name of the course.

A course you know very little about may turn out to have opportunities you had never considered. At the same time, spending several years studying something you genuinely dislike simply because you wanted admission can create another problem later.

How to Check JAMB CAPS Transfer Approval

If you suspect that your institution has proposed another course, log in to your JAMB profile and check CAPS.

Start from the official JAMB portal rather than following random links from WhatsApp groups or social media.

Go to the JAMB e-Facility portal and sign in using the login details connected to your JAMB profile.

From your profile, access your admission information and open CAPS. Look through the available CAPS options for Transfer Approval.

If your institution has proposed a programme transfer, the relevant information should appear there for you to review.

How to Check Transfer Approval on Your Phone

Many candidates access JAMB CAPS using a smartphone. Depending on the browser and page layout, some CAPS menu options may be easier to see in desktop mode.

If you are using Google Chrome, open the JAMB e-Facility portal and log in. If the full CAPS menu is not visible, open Chrome's menu and select Desktop site. Allow the page to reload and check the CAPS navigation again.

You should then look for Transfer Approval.

If the option is available, open it and carefully check the course information displayed before taking any action.

Do not accept or reject anything until you are certain that you understand what the institution is proposing.

How to Accept a JAMB CAPS Transfer Offer

Once you have opened Transfer Approval, review the information shown on the page. Confirm the institution, your existing programme and the new programme being proposed.

If you are satisfied with the new course and genuinely want to continue with it, use the acceptance option provided by CAPS and confirm your decision when prompted.

Do not rush through the page.

Take a screenshot or keep a record of the transfer information before submitting your response. This can be useful if you later need to explain the situation to your institution or an accredited CBT centre.

Once you have accepted, continue monitoring your CAPS admission status for further updates.

How to Reject a JAMB CAPS Transfer Offer

If you do not want the alternative programme, use the rejection option provided on the Transfer Approval page.

Before doing this, understand what rejection means. You are declining the institution's proposal to move you to that programme.

JAMB's CAPS guidance indicates that a candidate who rejects or does not accept the proposed movement remains with the existing programme rather than being moved to the proposed one.

That does not mean your original programme admission is guaranteed.

If you are unsure about the consequences for your particular institution, consider contacting the school's admissions office before rejecting the transfer.

What Should You Do After Accepting a JAMB Transfer?

Accepting the transfer is not necessarily the final admission step.

After accepting, continue checking your main CAPS admission status. Your institution and JAMB may still need to complete the remaining admission processing.

JAMB's current CAPS dashboard itself shows that admissions move through different administrative stages, including institution recommendation, desk officer processing, approval for candidate acceptance and candidate acceptance.

Therefore, do not panic if your normal admission status does not change immediately after you accept the transfer.

Give the process time and continue checking your profile.

Do You Need to Do a JAMB Change of Course After Accepting Transfer?

This is an important point.

JAMB's official CAPS policy materials state that when a candidate accepts movement to another programme, the candidate is notified to complete a change of programme so that the admission letter can be printed appropriately.

So accepting Transfer Approval and carrying out Change of Course should not be treated as the same action.

The transfer approval tells JAMB and the institution that you agree to the new programme. The subsequent course change aligns your JAMB record with the programme you have accepted.

JAMB currently lists Institution/Course correction at ₦2,500, with an additional CBT service charge listed separately on its official payment and services page. Because fees can change, candidates should confirm the current amount directly from JAMB before making payment.

Do not pay an agent an arbitrary amount because they claim that is the "official JAMB price."

Should You Change Course Before or After Accepting Transfer Approval?

If the institution has already proposed a course to you through Transfer Approval, deal with the actual transfer request first.

Do not randomly change your course simply because you heard that your institution is considering you for another programme.

You want your actions to correspond with what is actually showing on JAMB CAPS and what your institution has officially instructed.

After accepting a CAPS transfer, follow the JAMB instructions for aligning your programme information.

If you are uncertain about what your particular profile requires, visit an accredited JAMB CBT centre or contact JAMB rather than experimenting with your admission details.

How Long Does It Take for Admission to Show After Accepting Transfer?

There is no official fixed number of days that applies to every candidate.

You may see claims online that admission will appear exactly three days, seven days or fourteen days after accepting a transfer. You should not rely on those timelines as guarantees.

Admission processing involves the institution and JAMB, and candidates may be at different stages of that process. JAMB's current CAPS dashboard shows separate stages for institution recommendation, desk officer processing, approval and candidate acceptance.

If you recently accepted your transfer, continue checking CAPS periodically.

If a considerable amount of time passes without any progress, contact your institution's admissions office or use JAMB's official support system.

What If Transfer Approval Is Blank?

If you open Transfer Approval and nothing is showing, it generally means there is no transfer proposal currently available for you to act on through that section.

Do not click random buttons or pay someone to "activate" Transfer Approval.

If your school has specifically told you that you have been moved to another programme but nothing appears on CAPS, contact the institution's admissions office and ask whether the transfer has actually been submitted through CAPS.

You can also use the official JAMB support portal if you need assistance with an unresolved JAMB issue.

What If You Accepted the Transfer but CAPS Still Says Not Admitted?

Don't assume the transfer failed simply because your admission status did not change immediately.

First confirm that the Transfer Approval page now reflects your response. Then check whether your O'Level results are properly available on JAMB and continue monitoring your admission status.

JAMB's support guidance says candidates whose institutions have shortlisted them while CAPS still shows Not Admitted or Admission in Progress should check their O'Level upload, confirm that the institution has formally recommended them and check for any unaccepted transfer offer.

If all of these appear to be in order but your admission remains unchanged for a long period, contact the institution.

Can You Change Your Mind After Accepting a Transfer?

This is one area where you should be very careful with absolute claims.

Do not accept a transfer with the assumption that you can simply click another button tomorrow and undo everything yourself.

JAMB's published CAPS guidance explains the consequences of accepting or rejecting a proposed movement, but candidates facing an accidental or disputed transfer response should seek assistance from JAMB or their institution rather than attempting unofficial fixes.

This is why you should read the proposed programme carefully before confirming your response.

If you made a genuine mistake, use JAMB's official support system or visit an appropriate JAMB office or accredited centre for guidance.

Does Accepting a Transfer Affect Your O'Level Result?

Accepting a programme transfer does not mean your existing WAEC, NECO or other O'Level information simply disappears from your JAMB profile.

However, you still need to satisfy the admission requirements of the programme you are being moved to.

A course transfer is not a way of bypassing subject requirements.

Before accepting, it is sensible to check that your O'Level subjects and UTME combination are suitable for the alternative programme. You can use JAMB's IBASS resources and the institution's admission requirements to investigate this.

Can You Ignore a Transfer Offer?

Ignoring the transfer is not the same as accepting it.

JAMB's published CAPS guidance says that if a candidate rejects the movement or remains silent, the candidate remains with the existing programme and cannot be moved through that transfer process.

Therefore, if you discover a genuine transfer offer, don't leave it there simply because you are afraid to make a decision.

Research the proposed programme and decide whether you actually want it.

Does Accepting Transfer Approval Guarantee Admission?

JAMB's published policy presentation states that where the candidate accepts the proposed movement, the candidate moves to the new programme and “must be admitted.”

Even so, candidates should complete every remaining instruction on CAPS and from their institution rather than treating the transfer screen as the final admission letter.

Monitor the main admission page until the formal admission offer becomes available, respond to it as required and complete any instructed change of programme.

Your final JAMB admission documentation is what you ultimately want to have correctly reflecting your institution and programme.

Final Advice

If you see a course under JAMB CAPS Transfer Approval, don't accept it simply because you are desperate to see “Congratulations” on your admission page.

First find out exactly what course the institution is offering you. Research the programme, check its requirements and ask yourself whether you are genuinely willing to study it.

If you want the course, accept the transfer through CAPS and follow the subsequent JAMB and institution instructions, including any required change of programme. If you don't want it, understand that rejecting the transfer means you are declining that particular alternative, not securing admission into your original course.

Most importantly, don't pay anyone who claims they can secretly change your course, approve your CAPS or guarantee your admission. If something does not look right, use the official JAMB support portal or speak with your institution's admissions office.

That extra check is much safer than making a rushed decision about a course you may spend several years studying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about this guide

1What does Transfer Approval mean on JAMB CAPS?

It means an institution is proposing to move you from your current programme to another programme. JAMB's CAPS process gives candidates the opportunity to accept or reject that proposed movement.

2Why did my school transfer me to another course?

There can be several reasons. You may not have met the institution's requirements for the original programme, competition may have been high, or the institution may believe you qualify for another available programme. Contact the institution if you need the exact reason for your own case.

3What happens when I accept Transfer Approval?

You agree to be moved to the new programme. JAMB's CAPS guidance states that a candidate who accepts the movement is moved to the new programme and is subsequently required to make the appropriate change of programme for the admission letter.

4What happens if I reject Transfer Approval?

You decline the proposed programme. JAMB states that a candidate who rejects the movement remains with the existing programme and cannot be moved through that proposal. This does not guarantee admission into the original programme.

5Why is my Transfer Approval page empty?

There may simply be no active transfer proposal on your CAPS profile. If your institution says otherwise, contact its admissions office to confirm whether the proposed transfer has been submitted.

6Will I still need to accept my admission after accepting the transfer?

Yes, treat the course transfer and the final admission offer as separate stages. Continue monitoring your CAPS admission status and follow the instructions when your formal admission offer becomes available.

7Do I need to change my course after accepting the transfer?

JAMB's published CAPS guidance says candidates who accept movement to another programme are notified to complete a change of programme so they can print the appropriate admission letter.

8How much is the JAMB Change of Course?

JAMB's current official payment schedule lists correction of institution/course at ₦2,500, with the applicable service charge listed separately. Always confirm the current fee from JAMB before paying because charges may be revised.

9Can someone accept a Transfer Approval for me?

Your CAPS admission decisions are important and should be handled carefully. Avoid giving your JAMB login details to strangers, agents or people online who claim they can process admission for you.
