JAMB Chemistry: How To Prepare Step by Step

Chemistry has a reputation for being tough, mostly because of the calculations and the long list of reactions. But JAMB Chemistry follows a set syllabus, and the questions are fair if you practise.

You will meet 40 Chemistry questions in the UTME. Courses like Medicine, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry usually ask for it.

The main areas to cover

The syllabus runs from separation of mixtures and atomic structure to chemical bonding, acids, bases and salts, rates of reaction, electrochemistry and organic chemistry. The full list is on the JAMB website.

Do not try to learn everything in one go. Take one area at a time and finish its past questions before you move on.

Start with the basics

Make sure you understand the periodic table, how atoms are arranged and how elements bond. These ideas appear in almost every other topic, so a weak foundation will hurt you later.

Spend extra time on atomic structure and bonding at the start. When these are clear, the rest of the syllabus becomes easier.

How to handle calculations

Many Chemistry calculations use the mole, concentration and gas laws. Write the formula first, then list what the question gives you, then solve step by step.

Never skip the units. A common way to lose marks is to do the right calculation with the wrong unit. Practise ten calculation questions every few days.

Learning reactions without cramming

For reactions and organic chemistry, group things by type. For example, learn the alkanes, alkenes and alkynes as families and see what they have in common.

Write short summary tables in your notebook. When you see patterns, you remember far more than when you try to memorise each reaction alone.

A simple study plan

In the first weeks, go through each area of the syllabus with notes and ten to twenty past questions on that topic. In the later weeks, revise the topics where you keep making errors.

In the last month, do timed sets of 40 questions in about 40 minutes and review every mistake before the next set.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not memorise answers without knowing why they are correct. JAMB can change the numbers or reword the question, and then memorised answers will not help.

Also avoid leaving calculations to the last week. Chemistry needs regular practice to feel natural.

Making your own quick notes

Keep a small notebook with one page for each big area, such as acids and bases or organic chemistry. Write the key rules, one worked example and the common traps.

Before every practice session, read the page for that topic. These short pages become very handy in the last weeks before the exam.

Check your work after every set

After you finish a practice set, sort your wrong answers into three groups: careless mistakes, topics you did not know and calculation errors. Each group needs a different fix.

Careless mistakes need slower reading. Missing topics need more study. Calculation errors need more practice with the steps. This simple sorting saves a lot of time.

Rest and routine matter too

A tired brain forgets quickly. Sleep well, eat proper meals and take short breaks of ten minutes between study blocks so that your Chemistry revision actually stays in your head.

Pick a fixed study time every day, even if it is only one hour. A regular routine beats a few long, tiring sessions, and it keeps you calm as the exam gets closer.

Bringing it together

Chemistry becomes friendly when you build strong basics, practise calculations often and learn in patterns. Keep your daily routine steady and your confidence will grow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about this guide

1How many Chemistry questions are in the UTME?

There are 40 Chemistry questions. The whole paper is 180 questions in 2 hours, so you should plan your time across all four subjects.

2Which courses need Chemistry?

Medicine, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry and many other science courses ask for it. Check the subject requirements for your own course and university.

3How do I get better at Chemistry calculations?

Write the formula, list the given values, work step by step and check your units. Practise a few calculation questions every few days so the method becomes automatic.

4Do I have to memorise all the reactions?

Not blindly. Group reactions by type and learn the patterns, especially in organic chemistry. This is easier to remember and helps you answer reworded questions.

5Where can I find the JAMB Chemistry syllabus?

You can download it from the official JAMB website. It lists all topics and objectives, so it works well as a revision checklist.

6When should I begin timed practice?

Start about six to eight weeks before your exam. Do 40-question sets in about 40 minutes, then study every mistake carefully before you try another set.
